From Six Children to a Nationwide Mission: The Story of Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram

**A Humble Beginning with a Powerful Purpose **

In December 1952, Ramakant Keshav Deshpande—better known as Balasaheb Deshpande and later honored as Vanayogi—started Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram in Jashpur by enrolling just six Oraon tribe children in a hostel. Inspired by Gandhian tribal worker Thakkar Bappa and supported by the RSS, Deshpande aimed to offer an alternative to missionary schools, preserving tribal cultures while promoting uplift through education and welfare.

Growth Rooted in Territorial Outreach and Cultural Inclusion

What began modestly quickly expanded. Under Deshpande's vision, the Ashram opened schools, hostels, and apprenticeship centers across Raigarh and Surguja districts. By 1963, a permanent office in Jashpur was inaugurated by RSS chief M. S. Golwalkar. The organization attained national status in 1977, adopting the name Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram. By the early 1980s, staff had increased from 44 to over 260, including tribal volunteers. Program operations now span over 300 districts, delivering services in education, health, vocational training, legal rights, cultural festivals and more.

A Unified Vision: Tribal Empowerment Through Cultural Connection

Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram bases its work on the principle “Tu Mai Ek Rakt”—“You and I share the same blood”—emphasizing tribal inclusion in India’s broader cultural and civilizational heritage. It showcases that welfare does not need to erase tribal identity; rather, development must spring from a sense of belonging and respect. Over the decades, the Ashram has promoted tribal self-reliance through agricultural training, health camps, vocational education, and cultural celebrations, fostering harmony between tribal communities and the rest of society.
